Lee Majors, star of television's popular hit Six Million Dollar Man, here plays the title role in this account of the shooting down of the American spy plane over the Soviet Union in May 1960. The film vividly recreates the true story of Powers' capture, trial and subsequent conviction for espionage and his almost two years in a Soviet prison before being released in a carefully executed prisoner exchange. The results are absorbing throughout, with Majors, for once given the chance to show that he is a solid actor, giving one of the best performances of his career, subtle, sensitive, nerve-tingling and reaching a pitch in the courtroom scenes. Such reliable performancers as Nehemiah Persoff, Noah Beery Jr, Brooke Bundy, William Daniels and James Flavin offer the star sound support.
