This handsome film of Catholic statesman Sir Thomas More's trials under the whims of King Henry VIII scores in every department except with its stuffy history book dialogue. Paul Scofield --- who plays Sir Thomas --- won one of the film's six Oscars and all the other performances are just as good, notably Orson Welles's plotting Cardinal Wolsey, Wendy Hiller as Moore's understanding wife, and John Hurt's waspish politician Richard Rich.
