Somehow films set on ships are rarely as entertaining as those set on trains and planes. So it proves with director Beeban Kidron's film, which, despite the title (the heroine dreams of becoming an aviator), is set mainly on board a (deliberately theatrical) cruise liner. Newcomer Rakie Ayola's natural talent shines bright as the would-be flyer, but her all-too-distinguished British supporting cast overstate their cardboard characters in a story that shifts grindingly from one mood to another, and rarely touches base with reality. The excellent opening promises better, and the warmly attractive colour camerawork and stirring score are other plus factors. The appealing heroine flies here all right, but too much else remains grounded.
