This is not one of Tennessee Williams greatest works but, thanks to a heartbreaking performance of immense force by Vanessa Redgrave, it remains watchable almost throughout. She plays a woman locked in a loveless marriage that finally seems to be coming to an end with the terminal illness of her husband - but whose fate proves to be both at mercy of the local town and the wanderer Val Xavier (Kevin Anderson). This was originally filmed (as The Fugitive Kind) with Anna Magnani and Marlon Brando and, while Anderson scarcely has Brando's animal magnetism, Redgrave proves a steely match for Magnani's tempestuousness.
