More gloom and doom, passion and penance from the pen of Thomas Hardy in this big-scale TV adaptation of his 1878 novel. Catherine Zeta Jones is a tempestuous heroine in the finest Hardy traditions as the beautiful Eustacia who, bored with life in her native Egdon Heath, finds her fortunes entwined with those of devil-with-women Damon (Clive Owen). You know the Hardy scene: both marry other people but genes will out. Storm-tossed moors provide both a backcloth to the predictable romantic tragedy and a comment on the lives of those involved.
