Shy Jane (Charlotte Gainsbourg) takes a job as a governess at a Yorkshire mansion and falls in love with the troubled Mr Rochester (a heavily-sideburned William Hurt). Franco Zeffirelli's adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's classic novel emphasises the grim but it's a respectable effort and the performances are fine, although Anna Paquin, as the young Jane, is more convincing than Gainsbourg.
