A taut, well-made Hitchcock-style thriller, starring on an on-form Cuba Gooding Jr as, apparently, America's most honest lawyer, disbarred after denouncing a guilty client in court. He goes on to run a charter boat in Florida, but finds he cannot shake off the ghosts of his past, and his attempt to pass off a best-selling novel as his own work leads to his being charged with murder. If the yarn isn't entirely subtle or credible, it does boast loads of suspense and some considerable style in the film-making on the mysterious path to solving the puzzle. Tom Berenger, as the local cop on Gooding's case, and Eric Stoltz head the notable support cast. The film went straight to satellite in the UK.
