A good-natured romp that's fun to be with, despite not firing on all cylinders, especially towards the end. Britain's Jeremy Northam (with a solid American accent) and diminutive Steve Zahn are chain-gang convicts accidentally freed when their prison wagon swerves to avoid an armadillo. Stealing a gay couple's trailer, they find themselves assuming the latter's identities in the town of Happy, Texas, where they're expected to organise a sub-teen talent pageant. When Northam starts falling for the owner (Ally Walker) of the bank he's planning to rob and Zahn's told by pageant organiser Illeana Douglas that the town's tots have never qualified for the county finals, you can see where this is going. Complications are provided by the local sheriff (William H Macy) falling for Northam - a situation pushed rather too far into silliness - and the reappearance of the massive murderer (MC Gainey) who escaped with the boys. The armadillo almost steals the film.
