Doom on the farm. More misery on the moors. Up at the family farm, the herd has foot and mouth, the young son is dying from leukemia and the young daughter, seeing a mysterious blinding light that she takes for a vision, is shunned by the village. The Archers was never like this. So much grief, not to mention slowness of pace, is made partially tolerable by the tender and sensitive performance of Keri Arnold as the girl, reminiscent of the young Hayley Mills at the start of her career. Stephen Dillane is the father hitting the whisky, Kerry Fox the mum drawn to believe in her daughter's vision of the Virgin Mary. A subplot about the friendship of Keri with the new Hindi girl in the village doesn't really amount to much.
