William Hurt stars as Varian Fry, an American with a conscience, who raises money and sets off to Marseilles at the start of World War Two to rescue Jewish artists and intellectuals by getting them to the States. In true Schindler style, he manages to save 2000 people before the Nazis stop him. The TV movie Montreal-based production is a bit cramped and not always convincing but the true story's an important, little-known one and the acting is superb: Hurt is exactly right and Julia Ormond is excellent, winning a Golden Satellite Award as best supporting actress, as the frank-speaking woman who helps him.
