A romance never shown in UK cinemas - possibly because of its underlyingly drabness and it has no 'blockbuster' pace. But what it does have is John Hurt and Brenda Blethyn, compelling huge sympathy as two lonely middle-aged people trying to flee their unhappy pasts and find love. Behind the romance is a sort of thriller in which Hurt - an ex-con - is being chased by hoods who are after him for embezzled money, while struggling to hide his secret from landlady Blethyn. Low-key but touching.
