A highly imaginative film that a year later was the basis for one of the most successful TV series ever and a spin-off show, The Bionic Woman. Based on the book Cyborg by Martin Caidin, it features a sensitive, moving performance from Lee Majors, as an injured pilot who is rebuilt as a modern-day Frankenstein, with mechanical limbs that give him superhuman powers. It could have been incredibly corny but instead proves oddly touching, particularly in Majors's attempt to commit suicide when his automatic limbs are fitted. The series made Majors a multi-millionaire, but eventually degenerated into formula plots and clichéd scripts.
