Reminiscent of Return of the Secaucus 7, this is a film with many nice touches, human moments and fragments of natural comic dialogue. Yet it never quite threads them together in cohesive enough fashion to have the kind of emotional impact this kind of confined conversational piece needs to hit it really big. Eight people reunite for the funeral of one of their friends from a close-knit group of a few years back when their set-the-world-to-rights fervour burned more brightly. Glenn Close, William Hurt and Meg Tilly give stand-out performances in an excellent star cast. The dead friend was originally played by Kevin Costner in flashback scenes, but his role ended up on the cutting-room floor.
