Michelle Pfeiffer here gives a very different portrait of a mobster's wife to the one she gave in Scarface. Director Jonathan Demme, also in contrasting vein to his famous The Silence of the Lambs, cooks up a manic stew so bright and exaggerated that it jumps cartoon-like out of the screen. Throughout the film he takes delight in creating as many unexpected oppositions and goofy juxtapositions as possible. Look out for singer Chris Isaak as a hitman disguised as a fast food restaurant clown and Alec Baldwin as the doomed spouse. Matthew Modine, Oliver Platt, Joan Cusack, Mercedes Ruehl , Nancy Travis and Dean Stockwell complete a high-quality cast.
