And now to the movie itself! Director Ridley Scott puts the Oscar-weight tag team of Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe through their paces in riveting, true-life crime epic, American Gangster. Washington plays Frank Lucas, the Harlem druglord whose rise to power in the 1970s hit two major snags: the end of the war in Vietnam and the dogged work of incorruptible New Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Crowe). Dramatically and technically, Scott's excellent production means business.
Next up is The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising After moving to a quiet English village, young American Will Stanton learns that he is 'The Seeker', a key player in the battle between good and evil. With new powers and older friends, Will must travel through time to gather six signs before the diabolical Rider (Christopher Eccleston) can unleash the powers of darkness.
Ian McShane plays the wise old head guiding Will's young shoulders as Trainspotting writer John Hodge takes Susan Cooper's fantasy adventure novel for a Quantum Leap.
Monica Ali's vivid novel of the immigrant experience in London's East End is exquisitely brought to the big screen in Brick Lane . Tannishtha Chatterjee plays the demure Indian mother-of-two who finds her passion inflamed by Christopher Simpson's young British Moslem. Indian star Satish Kaushik delivers a delicious turn as the pompous, cuckolded husband. Newcomer Sarah Gavron directs with a sure hand.
The Pledge and Crossing Guard director, Sean Penn, steps behind the camera again to tell the far more heart-warming, if not slightly haunting true story of Christopher McCandless in Into The Wild , a young man who ups and leaves his safe, middle-class life in order to live in the wild, free from the shackles of man and the rat race he was supposed to excel in. Emile Hirsch surpasses expectations as the wandering McCandless, supported by a stellar cast and Penn's wonderful use of Uncle Sam's windblown back yard.
