Notable as the feature film debut for Shekhar Kapur (Bandit Queen, Elizabeth, The Four Feathers), this is a melodrama based on the trials of a near-perfect family. Naseeruddin Shah plays the well-to-do father of a family of girls who suddenly discovers that he also has a son (Jugal Hansraj), the result of a clandestine affair he had years ago. When the boy's mother dies, Shah has to tell his wife (Shabana Azmi) that the boy must be adopted into their family and treated as his male heir. Kapur's direction veers mostly towards the glossy soap opera image, but the acting raises it above TV suds by a couple of notches.
