Thandie Newton gives one of her most touching and understated performances as a resourceful runaway slave in North Carolina of the early 19th Century, while Jason Patric is his usual handsome but impassive self as the widowed farmer who assists her flight. This handsome-looking period drama takes its cue from these performances, in being too restrained and lacking urgency.
