The basic premise of this film - that a woman's imaginary childhood friend comes to life to cause havoc - is an amusing one. It's just a shame the film doesn't really make the most of it. Phoebe Cates is the woman with problems, who goes back to mother (Marsha Mason) after hubby Tim Matheson is caught philandering. The anarchic Fred is played in manic and frenetic style by Britain's Rik Mayall - and it's his performance that you'll either love or hate. The script is uneven and the comedy a bit basic. As one critic put it: 'Recommended only for those who think nose-picking is funny'. This was Mayall's first Hollywood effort. So far he hasn't been back.
