December on Classics
"I wish it could be Christmas everyday," sang Wizzard back in 1973 (and at every Christmas party since), and for film fans it is Christmas everyday in December on Sky Movies Classics.Classic adventure movies for dads of all ages, huge, all-star epics for Sunday afternoons, and a week long line-up of Chaplin to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Little Tramp's passing are only some of the glittering confections packed into thirty-one magical days.
New titles this month:
Boys' Own AdventuresThe old 'uns are the best 'uns rings true for Boys' Own Adventures, a season of classic "Dad movies" running from Christmas Eve to Sunday 30th at 9pm. Boasting evergreen classics The Guns of Navarone, Zulu and The Italian Job amongst some all time greats, and stars as luminescent as John Wayne, Michael Caine and Steve McQueen, this is hog-heaven for the adventure-seeker in all of us, mums as well as dads, girls as well as boys.
Christmas Day marks the 30th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin's death at the age of 88. To commemorate the occasion, Classics is running an authoritative Chaplin season from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve, boasting the best movies the comic genius produced, plus fascinating documentaries from filmmakers and historians on why Chaplin's movies have endured.
If less is more, just think how much more will be was the thinking during the 50s and 60s, when cinema screens got bigger yet epic movies easily filled them. Throughout December the Sunday Adventure is given over to five great examples of big, Big, BIG entertainment, including first plays of John Huston's The Bible, Cecil B. DeMille's The Greatest Show on Earth and Michael Curtiz's The Egyptian, plus a seasonal offering of The Greatest Story Ever Told.
Five Saturdays, five matinees, ten films. Christmas is the time for classic movies, and the winter-warmers don't come any cosier than Father Goose, Barefoot in the Park, An Affair to Remember or Indiscreet. Get the hot chocolate and sweets ready and settle in for a double bill of genuine class every Saturday afternoon.
