Mendes On Broadway
Sam lured to the US stage againOscar winner Sam Mendes is to return to Broadway to direct a revival of Gypsy, the hit musical about a renowned burlesque stripper.
Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters will play the ferocious stage mother Mama Rose in the new production which opens in A
pril 2003.The show was originally a hit on Broadway in the early 1960s and was later made into a musical starring Natalie Wood as Gypsy Rose Lee.
Mendes' first Broadway production, Cabaret, was a huge success when it opened in New York in 1997.
A few years later he triumphed again directing Nicole Kidman in The Blue Room, and also got the chance to direct his first feature film, American Beauty, which earned 5 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Mendes, a rare feat for a first time film director.
