The actor's accolade was in recognition of his recent venture behind the lens.
Washington has barely recovered from his success at last year's Oscars, and now he's celebrating the warm critical reception that his directorial debut, Antwone Fisher has received.
The film tells the story of a black sailor who has violent outbursts as a result of a deprived childhood.

Antwone Fisher himself was present at the awards, as well as Washington's wife Paulette.
The star-studded guest list at the Beverley Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, also included Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Keanu Reeves, Nia Vardalos, Angela Bassett, Ice Cube, Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey, Jamie Foxx and supermodel Giselle.
Antwone Fisher is set for release in the UK in March 2003.
