Phone Booth director says studio were right to delay his sniper movie

Director Joel Schumacher says it was "absolutely imperative" that 20th Century Fox delayed the release of "Phone Booth" in the midst of last year's sniper killings in the US.

Speaking at a film festival in Texas, he said "I would have been shocked if they'd put it out."

The film stars Colin Farrell as a man being threatened by a sniper who is just a disembodied voice on the line.

Fox pulled it in October, a month before its scheduled November 15th release, during the Washington sniper shootings that ultimately left 13 people dead and others wounded.

The movie now is scheduled for release April 4th in the US and April 11th in the UK.

"It was absolutely imperative that we pull it.

I mean, people were dying," Schumacher said. "We wouldn't have tried to put those commercials on television and there was no network that would have taken them."

Schumacher said he doesn't think people will be reluctant to see the film now that time has passed.

"It's not similar. In the movie my gunman has an agenda. He follows people for a long time," he said, unlike the real-life shootings, which were random.
