Rob Reiner
Born: 6th March 1945
Where: Bronx, New York
Rob grew up in the same Bronx neighbourhood as his future wife Penny Marshall and followed a path much like his father's, performing stand-up comedy and writing for TV shows.
After appearing in two films directed by his father, Enter Laughing, and Where's Poppa?, Rob made his TV debut in The Partridge Family in 1970.
Fame came knocking the following year when he was cast on the classic 1970s series All in the Family. Rob stayed on the show until 1978, winning two Emmy Awards, before leaving to pursue his own projects.
Rob and best friend Billy Crystal were born just eight days apart, and met when Crystal played Rob's friend in an epiosde of All in the Family. They have remained great friends ever since.
Rob produced, co-wrote and co-starred with then wife Penny Marshall in the TV movie More Than Friends, a romantic comedy based on the couple's own courtship, then made his feature directing and screenwriting debut with This Is Spinal Tap.
He followed with the teen road movie, Stand By Me, one of Rob's best films, which marked his first collaboration with Stephen King.
In 1987 he co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, and went on to score his biggest hit yet with the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.
Rob's first collaboration with writer Aaron Sorkin brought him his only Oscar nomination (Best Picture) to date as one of the producers of the military courtroom drama A Few Good Men.
In 1987, Rob stepped out from behind the camera to play his first feature role in ten years in Throw Momma from the Train, and during the 90s, his directorial work slowed down, and instead he worked with increasing frequency as an actor.
He made an appearance in his brother Lucas Reiner's directing debut, The Spirit of '76, played Tom Hanks' best friend in Sleepless in Seattle, and was seen in Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway.
He acted for the first time in a picture he directed, portraying Bruce Willis' best friend in The Story of Us.
He made a cameo appearance in David Spade vehicle Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star as himself.
