Despite the star presence of Michael Caine, Anthony Quinn and James Mason, and occasional flashes of directorial splendour from Robert Parrish, this is a largely routine thriller about a cop who hires a killer to assassinate a narcotics king. Caine (a likeable killer) and Quinn (the cop) give unusually relaxed performances, Mason offers a casual portrait of evil suavity and Alexandra Stewart has warmth as Quinn's mistress. An early chase with three assassins after Quinn in a vast, deserted station is eye-catching stuff. Unfortunately, nothing that follows quite matches it.
