It's only modestly scary, but in comedy terms this is a goldmine full of some very funny individual lines - "Listen! Do you smell something?"

Ghostbusters, written by and starring some of Saturday Night Live's most succesful members quite unexpectedly took the box-offices of the world by storm.

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis are a delight as three university boffins who become private exorcisers, attending to the needs of those overrun by malevolent spirits, when their college facility is whipped from under them.

After a slow start, business picks up - which isn't surprising, as Doomsday itself appears to be at hand.

Special effects throughout are well up to par and admirably counterbalanced by the humour, which is 'National Lampoon' pleasantly tamed and delivered with perfect deadpan timing - by the laconic Bill Murray especially.

Ivan Reitman's direction is fairly sharp, and the cast is so strong that even the most random pieces of dialogue become quotable.

Simply put, one of the finest comedies to come out of the 80s.
