This enjoyable film went largely unappreciated by the public on its first appearance, partly because its star, Kenneth More, was expected to turn up only in breezy comedies and stiff upper-lip war films. But, an ineffable sadness in his eyes, and really living the part, this study of a small-time actor's last chance for fame is probably his finest work for the cinema. Peter Yeldham's screenplay pulls no punches, and almost all of the supporting cast is very good indeed.
