Daryl Hannah

Born: 3 December 1960
Where: Chicago, Illinois

The former ballet dancer first made waves with her performance as mermaid Madison in Ron Howard's 1984 box office hit Splash.

She went on to become one of the iconic actresses of the 1980s in films such as Roxanne and Steel Magnolias before Quentin Tarantino breathed life into her career with Kill Bill.

The older sister of actress Page Hannah, and the niece of cinematographer Haskell Wexler she trained for ballet before switching to acting at the Goodman Theatre.

After she attended the University of Southern California she made her film debut in Brian DePalma's psycho-thriller The Fury in 1978 at 18.

At this time she also played keyboards and backing vocals for then boyfriend Jackson Browne.

Next up was the eye-catching part of android-who-doesn't-want-to-die Pris in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.

Showing her versatility from there, she grew fins for Splash and mutated into a Cro-Magnon in The Clan of the Cave Bear.

Her profile was raised with Roxanne - a contemporary take on Cyrano de Bergerac opposite Steve Martin - and Steel Magnolias alongside Julia Roberts.

Roles followed in movies including Grumpy Old Men, The Gingerbread Man and Melissa Painter's Wildflowers.

Hannah won the Jury Award from the Berlin International Film Festival for Best Short in 1994 for a film titled The Last Supper, which she directed, wrote, and produced.

In 2000, she starred in Michael Radford's semi-improvised film about Hollywood strippers Dancing At The Blue Iguana.

Her next significant role was as duplicitous assassin California Mountain Snake in Tarantino's Kill Bill alongside Uma Thurman.

Off screen, Hannah has also made headlines for her romance with John F Kennedy Jr.

Daryl has a number of projects currently lined up, including John Sayles’ Silver City and the Jewish drama, Lucky 13.
