Either we're all getting older and wiser, or film whodunits were slipping at the time this one was made. Certainly, anyone who isn't an hour ahead of Inspector Donald Sutherland in deducing the culprit in this murder thriller isn't the film crime expert they think. Directed by that passionate Hitchcock devotee, Frenchman Claude Chabrol, but not one of his best.
