Born into a showbusiness family - his father James and sister Tyne both act - he first attracted attention in the cult hit Diner.
Other notable appearances include Basic, The Outsider and Against the Ropes.
He first took to the stage while studying at Bennington College and went on to works at Providence's Trinity Square Repertory Theatre.
Daly made his off-Broadway debut in 1984 with Fables for Friends and he was cast as a young expectant father in 1982's Diner.
Dividing his time between TV and feature work. he is probably best known in America for the airline TV series Wings.
Despite the promising debut in Diner, he could only attract small roles in films such as Just the Way You Are and Alan Rudolph's Made in Heaven.
He starred in the lame sci-fi thriller Spellbinder which he followed with the forgettable comedy Love or Money.
Subsequent roles included the lead in Peter Yates' Year of the Comet and two box office flops - the erotic thriller Caroline at Midnight and the comedy Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde, with Sean Young as his alter ego.
He appeared in the 1995 indie film Denise Calls Up and fared better as Whoopi Goldberg's co-worker in 1996's The Associate.
On TV, he played cult leader David Koresh in In the Line of Duty: Ambush in Waco and also voiced the animated Superman series on TV.
In the last few years he has appeared in high profile films such as Basic, with Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta and Against The Ropes with Meg Ryan.
