A stalwart of British television, Wilton was a familiar face in series such as Ever Decreasing Circles and The Norman Conquests before her big screen break.
Her first feature was as Sonia in The French Lieutenant's Woman with Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep in 1981.
Roles followed in Clockwise with John Cleese before a major starring role in Richard Attenborough's Cry Freedom about anti-apartheid journalist Donald Woods (she played his wife).
Wilton also appeared in Blame It On The Bellboy, The Secret Rapture, Carrington and Tom's Midnight Garden.
Recent cinema appearances include Janet Stone in Iris and she can next been seen in Calendar Girls.
She is married to actor Ian Holm.
