Director Sam (Spider-Man) Raimi's cheap cult horror movie (it cost only $400,000) cleaned up at the box office and he was given a huge budget to remake it (as Evil Dead 2) in 1987. Five young people (headed by Bruce Campbell) seek shelter in a remote abandoned cabin --- and find pretty well everything except shelter. After the discovery of an ancient Book of the Dead, they're soon being possessed by dormant woodland demons, giving rise to some disturbingly gory special effects and to Raimi's trademark black humour. In the UK, the movie was a famous 'video nasty' and was not released on video until 1990 and in an uncut version until 2001. .
