The Evil Dead Director Sam (Spider-Man) Raimi's cheap cult horror movie (it cost only $400,000) cleaned up at the box office and he was given a huge budget to remake it (as Evil Dead 2) in 1987. Five young people (headed by Bruce Campbell) seek shelter in a remote abandoned cabin --- and find pretty well everything except shelter. After the discovery of an ancient Book of the Dead, they're soon being possessed by dormant woodland demons, giving rise to some disturbingly gory special effects and to Raimi's trademark black humour. In the UK, the movie was a famous 'video nasty' and was not released on video until 1990 and in an uncut version until 2001. .

I agree with John Smith, It is the greatest low budget film to grace the cinema screen, but it is also defines the word horror. Sure the acting might be a bit cheesy, but look at where Sam Raimi is now.

An absolute classic in horror movies. Although this movie is criticised for being to comic, in places it can be very scary. I have to say the plot is cheesy, but don't let that overshadow it. The atmosphere is very tense and very dramatic in places (especially the part when Ash kills his now ex-girlfriend). The ending is also wonderfully crafted.

This film is a brenchmark in horror, with a cheesy plot and wooden acting. Although this seems like I'm criticising it in fact this is what makes this film an instant classic. There is also a comical value to this film as well (not intentional). This is the greatest low budget horror movie ever to grace cinema.
