Amy Irving
Born: September 10 1953
Where: Palo Alto, California, USA
The former Mrs Steven Spielberg landed a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for the Barbra Streisand drama Yentl.
However, it was her turn as an eccentric bookseller in Crossing Delancey in 1988 that she was probably best remembered.
The daughter of stage director Jules Irving and actress Priscilla Pointer, the young Irving trained on the stage in New York and London.
At just 17, she began her acting career off-Broadway and appeared in the US soap Dynasty before making her big screen debut alongside Sissy Spacek in Carrie in 1976.
Roles followed in Brian de Palma's horror film The Fury, as a deaf woman in Voices and as a concert pianist in The Competition.
In 1980, she was the unwelcome recipient - as winner - of the first Razzle Award for her performance in Honeysuckle Rose opposite Willie Nelson.
Her Oscar-nominated turn in Yentl was also recognised with a Razzle award nomination for her role as Barbra Streisand's "wife".
After having dated him for several years, Irving married movie mogul Spielberg in 1985 when she became pregnant with their son, Max.
The marriage ended in 1989 with the prenuptial agreement netting her an estimated £70m.
The reason for the breakdown was Spielberg's affair with actress Kate Capshaw, who he directed in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984.
In 1988, Irving memorably voiced the songs for Jessica Rabbit in Who Killed Roger Rabbit? (Kathleen Turner voiced the dialogue).
Subsequent appearances included the action thriller Kleptomania, the Woody Allen comedy Deconstructing Harry and sequel The Rage: Carrie 2.
Irving has been involved in a long-term relationship with Brazilian director Bruno Barreto since 1996, and has a son with him, Gabriel.
She occasionally appears in Barreto's films, such as 2000's Bossa Nova and lives with him and her two sons in New York.
In 2000, Steven Soderbergh cast her in the Oscar-winning drugs thriller Traffic and she went on to star in the William Hurt drama Tuck Everlasting.
Recent work includes the chiller Hide & Seek alongside Robert De Niro.
