It's the old, old story of a teenage boy's initiation into manhood, but in this case given a whole new and potentially hilarious slant - besides providing Tom Cruise with his initiation into stardom. Joel (Cruise) is cornered into calling a call girl while his parents are away. After the inevitable night of bliss, he gets involved in her running away from a pimp, then incurs thousands of dollars worth of damage when he plunges his father's car into Lake Michigan. The girl (Rebecca De Mornay) turns out to have quite a head for business, and suggests that he can make a mint by inviting all her 'friends' over for a night if he'll invite his fellow students. This isn't quite the end of a story which has some beautifully funny moments, but doesn't carry its basic idea through with enough conviction; it sets up a nice theme and then pussyfoots around with it. Still, you'll be glad about the upbeat ending the scriptwriters have managed to devise to round it off.
