A quirky Woody Allen film in which the comedy is of a gentle variety. Allen both directs and stars as Danny Rose, a theatrical manager with a collection of no-hope acts. His luck changes when an overweight singer comes into fashion again thanks to a nostalgia boom. But he has Mafia connections - and Danny's involvement with his mistress Tina (Mia Farrow, brilliant if almost unrecognisable in a ridiculous bubble wig) lands him in hot water. It's the by-now-familiar Woody Allen theme of a loser triumphing against unbelievable adversity, but the little maestro this time brings it up fresh and funny. Most hilarious scene: Allen and Farrow running through a warehouse storing gas containers that, when hit by their pursuers' bullets, leave everyone talking in high-pitched voices.
