Jim Henson and his Muppet workshops caught everyone hopping with this brilliantly detailed and ultra-dark children's fantasy that was a million miles removed from the primary coloured brilliance of The Muppet Show. No Kermit or Miss Piggy in this universe, just monstrous flesh-eating Skeksis and their counterparts, the Mystics. They battle over possession of the shattered Dark Crystal, which will give ultimate power to the holder, unless it is restored to its rightful resting place. A young Gelfling has the task of saving the planet, but he's a real wimp and no mistake. A warning for children under 10: just as in the best Disney good versus evil tales, the dark side is represented by the sort of distressing creatures that could cause nightmares.
