Surprisingly anti-feminist for a Goldie Hawn film, and much-troubled in the making (three reels were apparently re-shot at Goldie's insistence), this wartime drama is much better than you might expect from all its production problems. There are sterling performances from a very strong cast, but what really gives the film its credibility is the work of its production designer, costume designer and photographer. Together they create an evocative period (the early 1940s) that brims with patriotism and feeling for a lifestyle and values worth defending. It's just a pity that the actual characters and their actions are not more likeable.
