Love, death and the avenging of family honour are the ingredients that keep the pot boiling in this rather numbingly stylish romantic tragedy from cult director Francesco Rosi. Rupert Everett (speaking English in the heart of Colombia) is unusually but quite successfully cast as a rich and eccentric drifter who courts a local girl but finds that their marriage precipitates scandal and murder. Despite suffering from a treatment that sometimes exaggerates the story beyond the real, the film remains a powerful, almost epic tale of impending and inevitable tragedy, its story neatly and satisfyingly tied up at the end.
