Love them or loathe them, most of director Alan Rudolph's films are unlike those by anyone else, and this science-fiction thriller/comedy/philsophical drama is certainly no exception. Kris Kristofferson is perfectly cast as the loner ex-cop trying to prevent a drifter and his wife from falling in with the underworld of Rain City. Stylish it certainly is and some scenes have a wonderfully bleak feel, but endings are not Rudolph's strength and here his computer mind finally overloads (and explodes) in a semi-slapstick finale.
