Only the jaunty, touching, incisive central performance of Annie Girardot keeps this French film from descending to soap-opera level. The plot relies heavily on coincidence and contrived melodrama as Girardot's chirpy, free-living doctor faces up to various watersheds in her life. Isabelle Huppert makes one of her earliest screen appearances as Girardot's pregnant daughter.
