Destined for supporting and the occasional lead roles, Mulroney has nevertheless made some high-profile performances including About Schmidt and My Best Friend's Wedding.
The one of four sons and a daughter of a legal professor and an actress, he was brought up in rural Iowa.
A schoolboy cellist (he actually played on the Melissa Etheridge album Never Enough) his debut feature was Blake Edward's Sunset.
