During a successful movie career one of the few award nominations the actor has had is for best kiss (with Winona Ryder) in How To Make An American Quilt.

Destined for supporting and the occasional lead roles, Mulroney has nevertheless made some high-profile performances including About Schmidt and My Best Friend's Wedding.

The one of four sons and a daughter of a legal professor and an actress, he was brought up in rural Iowa.

"I'm drawn to non-commercial material and that material is drawn to me. Hollywood big cheeses have no idea who I am, which is fine with me."

A schoolboy cellist (he actually played on the Melissa Etheridge album Never Enough) his debut feature was Blake Edward's Sunset.

Next up was the Western Young Guns and he drew critical acclaim for the part of John Deacon in Aids drama Longtime Companion.

Subsequent appearances included Where The Day Takes You, Samantha with Martha Plimpton and Bad Girls with Madeleine Stow and Andie McDowell.

He played some in How To Make An American Quilt and a detective in the gory thriller Copycat with Sigourney Weaver.

He starred in Robert Altman's Kansas City and went on to appear opposite Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding.

Recent work includes Trixie with Emily Watson and Britanny Murphy, arthouse movie The Safety of Objects and About Schmidt with Jack Nicholson.

In 2004, he starred with Josh Lucas in the drama Undertow and went on to star as a male escort opposite Debra Messing in The Wedding Date.

Recent work includes the ensemble drama The Family Stone alongside Diana Keaton and Sarah Jessica Parker.
