Alex McArthur carries on in the Clint Eastwood tradition as the taciturn, remarkably accurate gunfighter, forever looking, like The Fugitive, for the man who can clear him of a murder charge. Like the spaghetti Western directors, Virgil W Vogel is clearly more interested in action and stuntwork than characterisation, and makes way in the final shootout for the four sequels that were to follow. The best performance comes from Lise Cutter as the girl, an appealing and realistic character. It was written by the prolific Elmore Leonard, originally a writer of pulp Westerns, but now the famous thriller author more at home in city streets than on rolling plains. Minus factors: Yaphet Kotto's wig and the running time, both far too much.
