This Canadian TV movie, also known (rather more succinctly) as 'Red Earth, White Earth' (also the title of the source novel by Will Weaver), is a combination of drama and weepie that has an ailing script and fails to bring its central issues - especially the rights of native Americans in today's US midwest - into sharp enough focus. Even so, Britain's David Greene who, over the past two decades, has developed into one of the finest directors of TV movies on the other side of the Atlantic, still gets some riveting performances from a classy cast, especially Timothy Daly, as the main protagonist, Ralph Waite (formerly of 'The Waltons' ) as his alcoholic father, and veteran Richard Farnsworth as Daly's grandpa.
