This pilot for a series about a private eye in Los Angeles in the late Thirties benefits from nice period atmosphere and a stylish treatment by director Robert Day that includes some interesting use of muted colour, an unusual innovation for a TV movie. Tough, taciturn Robert Forster is ideally cast in the central role, there's a strong guest cast and a series duly followed.
