This film doesn't quite know whether it's supposed to be a thriller, a comedy or a comedy-thriller. So it never quite manages to be any of these things. Disgraced policeman Nick Starkey (Kevin Kline) is brought back to the force by his brother (the police commissioner), to track down a serial killer. The fact that Nick was once involved with his brother's wife and proceeds to have an affair with the Mayor of New York's daughter tend to interfere with the main thrust of the plot and slow things down quite a bit. Still, despite the fact that this is a notably flawed and distinctly odd film, it's still quite fun, thanks to good performances from a seriously heavyweight cast - especially Kline and Rod Steiger, in a wonderfully OTT, scenery-chewing, role complete with hideous, ill-fitting curly wig.
