The former Elite model had her big screen breakthrough opposite Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire.
The wife of John Travolta, she has also starred in successes including Addicted to Love and What A Girl Wants.
A child TV star in Australia, she moved to LA to study at the University of Southern California at the age of 20.
After being cast in the daytime TV serial Capitol, she got her big screen debut with 10 to Midnight and minor roles followed in films including Christine.
In 1983 she became a series regular on TV's For Love and Honor and three years later she met her future first husband Kevin Gage on the set of SpaceCamp.
In 1987 Preston had her first professional experience with John Travolta on The Experts and four years later they were married.
At the time Preston, who also dated George Clooney, was living with Charlie Sheen and was accidentally shot in their apartment in 1990.
Although fairly well known for some years, Preston's real movie breakthrough was in Jerry Maguire.
Subsequent appearances included Addicted to Love, Holy Man, Jack Frost and opposite her husband in Battlefield Earth, viewed by many critics as the worst film ever made.
Recent work has included What A Girl Wants with Colin Firth and she can next been seen in the live action version of Dr Seuss's Cat in the Hat.
