Karl Malden and Keith Carradine star as a tragic true-life father and son in this powerful and affecting drama. Elmo Zumwalt II (Malden) was an admiral during the Vietnam war and ordered the use of the poisonous defoliant Agent Orange. His son, Elmo III, also in Vietnam, was exposed to the dangerous herbicide. Some years later he contracts cancer and Hodgkin's disease and the father realises he is ultimately responsible for his son's impending death. Not a happy film, admittedly, but one that celebrates the dignity of the human spirit and deals with love and grief. The two leads and Margaret Klenck, as Elmo III's wife, give fine portrayals, making this a worthy and worthwhile film.
