This explicit account of a real-life axe murder in a small Texan town is not for the squeamish, as it contains a pretty graphic re-enactment of the crime. Barbara Hershey gives a stunning, utterly believable portrayal of Candy Morrison, model wife and mother, who, under hypnosis, reveals her grim story in flashback to psychologist Hal Holbrook. What emerges is a classic case of what can happen when a repressed character finally lets go. The result, in this instance, was Candy's savage murder of her lover's wife. The story is very well told by director Stephen Gyllenhaal (who also directed Hershey in Paris Trout) and features strong performances by Brian Dennehy as Candy's attorney, Richard Gilliland as her loving husband and John Terry as Stan, Candy's former lover. A spine-chilling examination of the horror that can lurk behind the neat front windows of middle America.
