Hippy but none too happy vertsion of the life of St Francis of Assisi according to St Franco Zeffirelli. It's kind of sweet and touching in its incredible naivety, but the script from posh writers who should know better and the acting from a bunch of largely British worthies is really just a little careless. Was everyone high at the time? Poor Graham Faulkner is wan, lost and too modern to cut much ice, and even Sir Alec Guinness seems to have gone astray in an unconvincing cameo as the Pope. It all looks as pretty as an Italian holiday souvenir picture, and don't you just love the idea of rich folks extolling the virtues of the simple life unemcumbered by material possessions? Donovan's tunes are toe-curdlingly cute.
