Made soon after his powerful 'Breaker Morant', this Australian rules football drama finds director Bruce Beresford on less sure ground. It's a talky affair - actually more shouting than talking - based on a successful play by Aussie playwright David Williamson, whose earlier 'Don's Party' was also filmed by Beresford. The people portrayed here are whingeing, aggressive, abusive and annoying, and because of that they lose any sympathy their plight might deserve. The ever-reliable Jack Thompson has the best role as an over-the-hill coach and former player. And he doesn't disappoint.
