The beautiful Catherine Deneuve plays Alice, the mother of two children, each by a different father. Director Claude Berri's account of a woman who, by her own admission, does not believe in the possibility of lasting relationships and who can financially afford the luxury of remaining single, is potentially most interesting with Jean-Louis Trintignant and Gérard Depardieu as co-stars hedonistic premise makes for a self-indulgent diatribe which attempts to champion independent women. In the end, the central figure is a sad one. Disappointing and confusing because, by utilising a series of flashbacks, triggered of by Alice's memories, we begin to ask the question: why is she alone? Not shown in British cinemas which, with these stars, is a sad reflection on wasted potential.
